1. Automate an intention, not indecision
Choose a parameter because it serves an intention: opening a filter, raising a level, increasing an effect, or moving pan. Avoid curves added only to make something move.
2. Start with few points
Two or three points are often enough for a transition. Add points only when the intermediate shape is truly necessary. A simple curve is easier to read, edit, and transfer.
3. Listen to the transition in context
Automation may sound correct in a short loop but become too fast or too strong in the full arrangement. Listen before, during, and after the transition.
TIPS
Keep these in mind
- Automate one clearly audible parameter first.
- Start from a sensible base value before drawing the curve.
- Remove points that do not materially change the result.
AVOID
- Automating several linked parameters without checking final level.
- Creating dozens of points for a simple rise.
- Forgetting to check the value at loop restart.
