Automation: move a parameter over time

Create useful motion without turning every parameter into a complex curve.

01

1. Automate an intention, not indecision

Choose a parameter because it serves an intention: opening a filter, raising a level, increasing an effect, or moving pan. Avoid curves added only to make something move.

02

2. Start with few points

Two or three points are often enough for a transition. Add points only when the intermediate shape is truly necessary. A simple curve is easier to read, edit, and transfer.

03

3. Listen to the transition in context

Automation may sound correct in a short loop but become too fast or too strong in the full arrangement. Listen before, during, and after the transition.

TIPS

Keep these in mind

  • Automate one clearly audible parameter first.
  • Start from a sensible base value before drawing the curve.
  • Remove points that do not materially change the result.

AVOID

  • Automating several linked parameters without checking final level.
  • Creating dozens of points for a simple rise.
  • Forgetting to check the value at loop restart.
