01

Choose an appropriate source

Action

Use Mono Lead for a focused phrase, FM Keys for metallic color, or Pluck for short phrases.

Why

The source should already provide the desired attack and sustain.

02

Write a phrase with gaps

Action

Create a short phrase and leave gaps. Repeat a recognisable motif before varying it.

Why

Silence gives the lead rhythmic identity.

03

Shape attack, brightness, and length

Action

Shape the instrument before EQ. Make the attack clear and control tails.

Why

Lead clarity depends more on envelope than raw volume.

04

Create measured depth

Action

Add delay or reverb, then lower wet until the attack stays clear.

Why

A lead can sound large without becoming distant.

CHECKLIST

Before finishing

  • The phrase remains recognisable at moderate level.
  • Attacks are not masked by effects.
  • The lead leaves space for other tracks.
