01
Choose who owns the deepest low end
Action
Decide whether the deepest weight comes from the kick or bass. Adjust register and note/decay length accordingly.
Why
Two sources occupying the same space mask each other even at low volume.
02
Fix timing and lengths
Action
Check where the kick hits and where bass notes start or end. Shorten unnecessary overlaps.
Why
A few milliseconds or one overly long note can blur the low end.
03
Balance levels before processors
Action
Lower both tracks, rebuild the balance, then check the master.
Why
An over-loud low end often feels less defined.
04
Use EQ or compression with intent
Action
Correct only the area that genuinely masks, or stabilise dynamics if needed.
Why
Processing should solve the remaining problem, not replace the first three steps.
CHECKLIST
Before finishing
- The low end has a clear hierarchy.
- Kick and bass remain distinct at low volume.
- The master does not depend on a limiter just to survive.
